As I sit at my desk, watching the newborn lambs gambling across the farm I am tasked with writing the “Our Journey” content for our spangly new website.

It’s such a tough thing to do, you see Bec (Head Distiller) and I (Ade – CEO & Designer) live this dream every day, we live on the farm which is home to the distillery and we spend most hours of most days absorbed in the creation of our award winning spirits. Happy distilling geeks, thats us.

Before we followed our spirit pathway we both had “proper jobs” but found ourselves adrift after redundancies. Bec took on a job at a local distillery and it quickly became apparent she had an exceptional palate and the ability to craft intricate and unforgettable botanical flavours. I had always enjoyed design and over the years had become the go to guy for friends logos and such, paid for with the universal currency, beer.

Bec and I decided to go it alone and created Cuckoostone Distillery, the name inspired from our foraging walks in the National Forest Plantation near Matlock in Derbyshire, which start on Cuckoostone Lane. During those walks we talked about creating spirits and brands which were linked to our immediate environment, The Peak District, with foraged and home grown botanicals and absolute honesty and passion at their core. I also wanted to innovate and pursue ideas and concepts that were left field and eclectic, its a saturated market, let’s be honest, so if we were going to do this, it had to be something different and exceptional.

The next few years have been a rollercoaster, we moved to Church Farm and built a quirky and original distillery from scratch on a shoestring budget. We have learned the skills required to physically build the business, from plumbing to carpentry, we’ve touched and worked on every inch of the distillery, we know it intimately and regard it as a best friend. It can have its moments, but all best mates do.

Our days are spent foraging and growing our botanicals. Our days are spent distilling on our basic, but brilliant stills, made from repurposed 100 litre beer kegs with hand-built copper columns, called Walter and The Dude, and our 50 litre pot still, called Maude. Our days are spent hand making true artisan spirits. Our days are spent designing innovative and exceptionally detailed brands. Our days are spent making sure the brief moments you invest in our products are unique, unforgettable and tasty!
